Just a quick link

I thought this story on ESPN.com was interesting; it's a conversation between Bill Simmons and Malcolm Gladwell. Simmons I've mentioned before. Gladwell is a great writer; I've had conversations about "Blink"'s application to Ultimate before and it might have been blogged about before although I can't remember.

Anyway, the part that made me want to link it was the section that begins, "You're probably right." The application to Ultimate is fairly obvious.

A few responses:

- 2005 Plummer was more successful in the Broncos offense (with pretty similar supporting offensive personnel) than Griese, Frerotte, Beuerlein, etc. Granted, Plummer is just plain more talented than those guys.

- Shanahan definitely tailored the game plan to Plummer. The most obvious example of this was the increase in the number of passing plays where Plummer rolled out to the right. The passing plays were slanted toward the things that Plummer does well.

- The fact that what he said about Plummer in that hypothetical universe doesn't change the nature of Plummer, was precisely his point. It is difficult to distinguish where an individual's inherent talents end and where their ability to operate within a complicated system begins.
